Lenten Season Events -  February through April 4th (Easter)

Wednesday, March 10th, at 7:00 p.m. .......

                             The Labyrinth
                            Two opportunities:
3/10/10   and   3/31/10
                           Session#1:  11am - 1pm   Session#2: 5pm - 8pm
                   Fellowship Hall

People, formal cultures, and traditions have used the spiral and labyrinth designs as a symbol of their search for meaning and guidance. The labyrinth is a "unicursal" or one path design - there are no tricks or decisions to be made - much as the surrender to walking a sacred spiritual path in life.  Our only decision is to choose spirit/God and surrender to divine guidance. Labyrinths have been in use for over 4000 years.

The Labyrinth will be located in the fellowship hall, and members of our community are invited to come anytime during session#1 and/or session#2 (see above for the dates/time)

Lenten Reflections
3/17/10
7:00 pm at SOTV
We will learn how LECTIO DIVINA, as a spiritual practice, can help us to experience God during lent.

Lectio Divina is an ancient method for praying with the Bible, being open to hearing in the words of Scripture a personal, enlivening and transforming word from God.

Centering Prayer
  3/24/10
7:00 pm at SOTV

We will learn how CENTERING PRAYER, as a spiritual practice, can help us experience God during lent.
Centering Prayer is a form of contemplative prayer through which one lives out the desire to be in God's presence simply by resting in that presence, without need for dialogue or action. Instead, a single word directs the intention toward intimacy with the divine.

Maundy Thursday
4/1/10  at  7:00pm
Location: SOTV Sanctuary

When the church worships on Maundy Thursday, it remembers the last evening that Christ spent with his disciples in the upper room. Three major events make up this evening: he washed the disciple's feet, he instituted the Lord's Supper, and he gave them the "new" commandment to love one another.
The name of this day comes from the last of these. "Maundy" comes from the Latin “mandatum novum," referring to the "new commandment" Jesus gave his disciples in John 13:34.

Stations of the Cross: Family Oriented Version
4/2/10    11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Location: SOTV Building

The Stations of the Cross, also known as the Way of the Cross, is a popular devotion used to meditate on different scenes from the Passion and death of Christ.
Its function is to dramatize the passion and so to make it real to us on an emotive as well as an intellectual level.
The original version of the stations of the cross consists of 14 stations, but we are going to do the shorter version which consists of 6 stations and is accessible for chidren, youth, and adults.

Good Friday: Service of Tenebrae
4/2/10 at 7:00 pm
Location: SOTV Sanctuary

The service of Tenebrae, meaning "darkness" or "shadows," has been practiced by the church since medieval times.
Once a service for the monastic community, Tenebrae later became an important part of the worship of the common folk during Holy Week. We join Christians of many generations throughout the world in using the liturgy of Tenebrae.

  • The Christian Dinner Crowd (TCDC)
Come join us for fun, great food and fellowship. We are divided into groups of eight (approximately). This past season, we had five groups, so we are growing in number. We meet for dinner once a month in the home of one of our group for four months. During the fifth month, all of the groups come together for dinner at Quarters. This is a great way to get better acquainted with other people in the church. Sign-ups are in the Gathering Space, so sign-up now for your “spot at the dinner table.” Questions: call Bob & Kay Campbell at 828-1085.
  • Ladies Out-to-Lunch Bunch meets the second Monday of the month.  Come for fellowship, fun, and food! Reservations: call Lynn Chavez at 350-9675.
  • Men’s Luncheon is the fourth Wednesday of the month at Steak and Ale at 2105-A Louisiana NE at noon.
  • Project Linus: We meet the second Monday of the month in the Adult Class Room. Project Linus is dedicated to providing love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, hand-made blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.” We have made 2,380 blankets. For more information, contact Betty Jo at 898-8385.
  • TLC Team gives “tender loving care” to the members and friends of SOTV. We have a call tree to check on those who live alone or would like daily contact with someone from the church. If you would like to receive a call or would like to be a caller, call Ruth at 249-1575. Please use the cards in the pews to let us know your needs, fill out and place in offering plate. .
  • “Are You Hard of Hearing?” The trustees are going to be ordering more receivers for our sound system. These receivers help people with hearing difficulties because they can amplify the sound. If you would like to use one (or if you would like to buy your own personal unit - $95.00) please tell Wess Caldwell or Glenn Folkins so we will know how many to order. We currently have 5 units.
